The Kenyan landscape can be likened to aging wine. Gets better and finer by the day. And as you scroll down, you will definitely understand why; and definitely (not maybe) agree with me. But today, we will discuss Nairobi – or Kanairo – as Kenyans like to call it.
You will one day get exhausted by the rattle and riotous in Nairobi and you’ll just hop into a morning tour van; and in just 45 minutes, you’re experiencing the serepindity of the World’s only National Park; Nairobi National Park. Gazing at the giraffes browsing and the Rhinos fighting over who’s strongest; that easy drive will do wonders for your soul. How about the snake park? Who can ever say no to learning and looking at the slithering creatures (me, but that’s not the point)? The Snake Park is just a few minutes from the CBD, like you can literally just pop in during your lunch break. Have you ever fed the giraffes? No? Well, giraffe center is within the vicinity and you can see feed them the pellets. They never say no and they are very graceful and friendly while at it; can’t bite the hand that feeds you, right?
Just as you head South West of the CBD, you get to Karen Blixen Museum. Stepping into the Museum feels like stepping into a different realm of the past. The museum is loaded with history of the lady and author, Karen Blixen, who recounts her captivating story of her years in Kenya. A home famous for selling made in Kenya mementos, manuscripts, her personal artefacts, Kenya’s rich history and her love for Ngong’ hills – which btw is a hikers, campers and photographers paradise; just 1.5 hours drive from the CBD.
Are you hungry just yet because the vibrant and diverse Kenyan Cuisines are to die for. The street food; and particularly mutura (best eaten under the cover of darkness) and smocha is paradise in the mouth. We have great recommendations for some of Kenya’s finest restaurants and cuisines, which are diversely spread over the 43 ethnic groups.
The Maasai Market is right within the CBD and; the art and craft laden in that building, you will for sure experience the havoc of choice (a good read that one!). The beaded jewelry, the cowrie shells jewelry, the copper jewelry, the shukas, the clothes, wooden carvings, paintings and photographs there will mesmerize you.
The David Sheldrick wildlife Trust is the place of endless elephants. Our tusked buddies are sheltered, rescued and rehabilitated; you are allowed to interact, hear their names, feed and watch the little ones play around and the growing ones assert dominance. You will be shocked at the lengths the Trust goes into to ensure preservation of the elephants happen.
Would you like to indulge into a little dance, music and listen to some folklores? Where else than Bomas of Kenya? You get to experience different traditional homesteads and cultures in a single compound. You get the entertainment and on a good day and if you’re lucky, you can join the dance on the stage. More theatrical experiences are at The Kenya National Theatre and The Nairobi Cinema.
If you still have more energy to burn, a walk or cycling trail at the crisp urban Forest Reserve; Karura Forest will burn that energy off followed by a peaceful picnic while bird- watching at Nairobi Arboretum will do the magic.
Just one more remaining, finish this off at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre – the panoramic landmark view of Nairobi City – best unmatched city in Africa.
